Welcome Dinner and Elliot’s program on Eva Peron & Evita

(As ambitious as she is charismatic, Eva Duarte rises from poverty in rural Argentina to become first the mistress and then the wildly popular wife of President Juan Perón. Blending the personal with the political, this landmark of the modern musical theatre paints a dazzling portrait of a woman who helped shape history.)

Friday, July 9th

The Stratford Shakespeare Festival Day (http://www.stratfordfestival.ca/)

Morning departure via charter bus. Snack lunch on bus. Entertainment by Elliot as he enlightens us on Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

Sightsee, shop, & stroll around town of Stratford.

2:00 Production of Evita at the Avon Theatre

(The Avon Theatre began life in 1901 as a vaudeville house called Theatre Albert, but by the 1950s it was being used almost exclusively as a movie theatre. The Stratford Shakespeare Festival bought the premises in 1963, after renting it for several seasons as a venue for its music and film festivals. A number of major renovations took place over the ensuing years, culminating in the massive renewal project that was completed in 2002.)

Dinner at The Church restaurant

8:00 Production of The Tempest starring Christopher Plummer as Prospero at the main Festival Theatre.

(The Festival Theatre began in 1953 as a tent standing over a wooden thrust stage which was surrounded on three sides by the audience. Such a stage had not been seen by theatre-goers for centuries. Designed by Tanya Moiseiwitsch to specifications proposed by Tyrone Guthrie, this stage has subsequently influenced the design of over a dozen other theatre buildings throughout the world. With the overwhelming success of the Festival’s first season, plans were made for a permanent structure. Designed by architect Robert Fairfield, the award-winning building opened in 1957. The building and its stage have seen a number of changes since then, the most recent of which took place in 1996-97. At that time the front-of-house facilities were extensively remodelled, creating better seating, sightlines and acoustics in the auditorium.)
