Originally from Indianapolis, Dr. Engel now resides in Raleigh, NC where he has taught courses at NC State University, University of North Carolina, and Duke University. Dr. Engel earned his M.A. and Ph.D. as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at UCLA. While at UCLA he won the university’s Outstanding Teacher Award. In addition for his scholarship and teaching, he has received North Carolina’s Adult Education Award, North Carolina State’s Distinguished Outreach Professorship, and the Victorian Society Award of Merit.

With 260 lectures a year covering over 50 literary topics, Dr. Engel speaks to a wide variety of audiences ranging from 1200 people at a Town Hall to a classroom of 10 eager elementary students. Past audiences have included the Michigan State University Alumni Group, the International Conference of C.E.O.s in Scotland, Princeton Friends of the Library and the Orthopedic Surgeons Association in Boston.
